Hello,
My
blog focuses on the double standard between men and women, and specifically, on
sexual violence between men and women.
This video clearly reveals a double
standard on sexual violence between men and women. As you saw in this video, a woman chopped her
husband’s penis off, and threw it in the garbage disposal. The audience, as well as the hosts found this
hilarious.
However, if a man were to chop off a
woman’s breasts it would be deemed an abomination, and definitely not something
that would be laughed about by an audience on television.
1 There are countless double standards present in
society, which bother you the most?
3 Do you think this double standard empowers women, or
do you think this double standard is inconsistent and wrong?
4 Why does society view rape differently when the victim
is a man rather than a woman?

The double standard that bothers me the most would have to be the fact that when a woman sleeps with alot of guys she is considered a slut, whore and much more but when a man does the exact same action he is considered a man? What? Girls have to be so careful with everything they do just so society doesn't label them. It is precieved totally differently when a man is sexually active with a lot of women and when a women is sexually active with a lot of men. This doesn't do any justice to women.
ReplyDeleteIt is not acceptable to laugh because whether its a man or a woman sexual vioence is sexual violence. People need to become open minded and realize that this is not a funny matter. I guess society allows it because a man is suppose to be strong therefore, be able to fight a woman. A women however, is weak and cannot self defend herself.
This double standard is inconsistant and wrong and i don't see why anyone would be ok with women behaving like this towards sexual violence. Maybe, people need to bring up this issue more often so women can see their wrong behaviour and reflect upon it.
I agree with your statement. I believe these double standards exist because the media has influenced the genders to act a certain way. As a result, if people act differently than what is considered normal they get labeled either positively or negatively.
DeleteI think each culture has its own double standards. For example the most prevalent in the western society is the double standard of being called a slut if you have often sex. Men on the other hand are not degraded if they do the same and are actually considered someone with a high status.
ReplyDeleteIn brown cultures, a lot of families that base their values on the traditions that their parents and grandparents taught them, they see their daughters to be very fragile and the sons to be strong. Girls aren’t given weary tasks to do for example but boys would be. Also in a lot of families boys are given ample of rights and freedom while the girl is expected to be reserved and quiet.
I don’t think it’s acceptable for the women to react like that towards the man’s dilemma. It shows how selfish and prejudice we are. And I agree with your statement that if a woman was assaulted like this everyone would hate men and call them beasts. The woman who did this is barbaric and so are the ones that think this is acceptable. Double standards don’t always empower women. It depends on how the society and culture functions and the role that women play in it. Due to the fact that women are portrayed to be more emotional, physically weaker than men, and fragile in the media, all sympathy lies for the female population. Men are portrayed to be sexual driven and they can’t control themselves therefore no one views them to be the victim in any situation that is sex related.
I agree, in some brown families the girls do have less rights. For example, some parents may not let their girls go outside in fear that they may get robbed/raped, and this is probably because rape is a normally occurring thing in their country.
DeleteIn my culture, there are a couple of double standards that I could live without. One of them is that if a guy wants to go out with his friends, then there is no problem, but if a girl wants to do the same, then she is interrogated, and questioned beyond measures. Parents have to ask, “Who are you going with?” “What time are you leaving?” When are you coming back?” What will you be doing?” Who is going to be there?” And the list continues. I don’t get it, is there a trust issue, or are the parent just so over protective that they want to keep the girls in a box. I personally have never had this happen to me, but it is a common practice among parents of my culture.
ReplyDeletePersonally I don’t think that it is acceptable for women to laugh about sexual violence towards males because it is disgusting. I think that some women think it is okay because women have been abused, battered, and sexually assaulted by men for a long time, so if a woman does something like this, then to them it is just payback, and a way to even the scoreboard. I think that some women (namely feminists) have a huge problem with male dominance and they will try anything to make men look and feel bad.
I am not in favor of double standards because they are just a way of belittling the opposite gender. I think that any double standard is unfair, and society would be better off without double standards because it would promote equality and everyone would have the same freedoms as anyone else.
I think that society views rape differently when the victim is a man because we have this idea in our head that men should be able to defend themselves, and that women are weak and can’t defend themselves. This is obviously not the case for men and women both, because if it was, no man would be raped and every woman would be. What we have to understand that men can be vulnerable and women can be strong. This is another vicious double standard that is unfair to both men and women.
I agree with your statement, women are seen as weak and vulnerable. This double standard is unfair and should be gotten rid of.
DeleteIn my culture one double standard that bugs me the most is that when you have a son its like party time!! and when you have a girl it's like she isn't important and there is no party :(. A few other double standards that bug are already mentioned by zara, sulha and nimra.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it is acceptable for society to laugh at anyone when it comes to sexaul violence, because you could go through it too and if someone laughed at you, you wouldn't like it...but i think why the talk show hosts are laughing is because of the reason as to why she did what she did.
I don't think it empowers women, but the same question could be asked for men, and men usually have the power in the house or sometimes on women, but usually this type of violence occurs when the women has had enough because of abuse and violence she might be going through. For instance, i watched this movie in gym class and she was being abused and her mother in law knew she was being abused and she did nothing about it either, so one night she was going to bed and she lit her husband on fire, she was also sent to prison. so I guess its an act on violence and abuse someone faces.
Society views rape differently when it comes to men rather than women, because as a society we hear more about women being raped by men rather than men being raped, it seems odd...but it does happen. Also society sometimes might have a hard time accepting or believing men if they were raped because of the way society has put it,Although it would probably be a longer investigation, and as zara has mentioned it's also because of the view we have on genders. men = strong women = weak.
Very enlightening comment. I agree with these wise words. Thank you for commenting, and have a nice day.
Deletelol your welcome and you too :)
DeletePeople are usually bothered by double standards which affect them.
ReplyDeletePeople are bothered with how women can't sleep around with men without getting a label and men can. In my culture, this isn't true. It is frowned upon for anyone to have premarital sex. This against a religious belief.
What bothers me is some Islamic societies for practicing double standards. Someone mentioned how parents are more happy to have a son. Muslims are supposed to love all their children equally.
Rape is viewed different when it happens to men. A man has to have an erection in order to be raped by a woman . He also has to be overpowered by another man or women. Which is viewed as feminine.
I agree. Rape if viewed differently towards a man than a woman. This double standard is wrong and inconsistent.

ReplyDeleteThe double standard that bothers me the most is that men are jerks and women are victims. If a man and a woman get into a conflict or confrontation, in almost every situation the guy is the jerk and the girl is the victim unless the woman has won. This happenes regardless whether the woman was wrong or not. I dont really mind that women laugh at sexual violence against men simply because I know they know in reality it would be no laughing matter. Another reason I dont mind woman laugh at sexual violence against men is because I do believe is does slightly empower them, and to me, why not let them have that. I feel society views the rape of a man differently from the rape of a woman simply because a man should be physically able to defend themselves while a woman, in most cases, cannot.
ReplyDeleteThe double standard that bothers me the most is when a male sleeps with many females he's a legend, but when a female sleeps with a few males, shes classified as a whore. I don't think it is acceptable for either gendre to laugh at one another's misery. Similarly, I don't think this empowers women or men. It is inconsistent and faulty. The gender roles contribute to this because its society's norm on how a gender should be. Since women are "weaker" then men, and they bear the pain of having a child, society tends to pity women and sympathizes with them. Especially when it comes to rape. It is a serious issue and these gender roles need to be removed.
ReplyDeleteWomen probably usually laugh at sexual violence because they hardly commit this crime. Men are the ones who usually commits these crimes. But I think it is not right to laugh at these crimes, it is unacceptable. I feel that double standards empower women in some ways. When a man gets rape people see it differently than women. People would question "how could you get raped?" and this makes the man lose his "manhood."
