Overrated?

Hey class, before you begin reading I want you to see this....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uu4q2-nbvrw

I believe homosexuality is a very overrated topic which is discussed daily.. I don't believe it is a very big deal, like most people think. Being neutral in this situation is my thing. Your neighbor is gay, so what? Being gay has nothing to do with how you treat people. Eminem once said “I don't care if your white black brown asian tall short fat or gay, as long as you treat me in a good way I will treat you good too". That's the manner I believe people should obey. Race, religion, and your background don’t define you! How many people do you know that are straight and are douchebags? I know a couple of them. I have met one gay guy who was in my gym recently but left. He was a nice human being; he would always have a smile on his face and greet people in the locker. One guy came up to him once and asked him nicely “why are you gay?" The gay man replied back with “why does it matter?" This is why I'm telling this story, WHY DOES IT MATTER?

People are willing to go out and strike over this... Really? Why don't you guys strike against governments that are killing others, or why don't you strike against people that inspire terrorism? This is way too big to be talking about because what about poverty? Economy? Jobs? These are big deals but people want to judge, and criticize gays. I think it’s a bit selfish for people to be against homosexuality.
People expect themselves to get married and live happily, meanwhile another person is being judged by everyone for liking someone of the same gender. Under what law, religion, or rule does it say you can judge?  Are you perfect? If you're perfect, maybe you should judge but who is perfect? Exactly no one is. We all make mistakes and errors. This is my view on homosexuality. Like what have gay people done to you? Let them live freely and enjoy themselves. Besides, people don't look at awesome gay people. I mean Neil Patrick Harris is gay and look at him, his freaking awesome. Freddy Mercury ? That guy can sing 50% better than today's generation.

This is the way I feel about this topic(of course without the daughter part)...http://www.memecenter.com/fun/984358/badass-grandma-on-homosexuality

My questions for the class are : 1) Why do you think homosexuality is something talked about all over the place?
2) Do you agree with me that it is over-rated?
3) Why would people be so concerned about gays around them?
4) Do you think gay people should start telling the truth about themselves?

  1. I think that homosexuals are being talked about so much is because people have nothing better to talk about! To be honest, people think that homosexual people are the reason for a lot of the ills-in society. Also, they think that they might be corrupting the minds of kids that they potentially adopt. People are just afraid to be open-minded.

I totally agree with the this topic being overrated. The anti-homosexual public needs to get over it. I'm not saying that they should accept them, but just leave them alone, because it is non of their business. In my religion, homosexuality is condemned and as a practising Muslim, I can't argue with that topic. However, I would also like to say that my religion also condemns killing or hurting other human beings. So for me, instead of protesting against homosexuals and being involved in hate crimes, I would choose just to let them do what they want, because it isn't affecting me.

I think that people are so concerned about the gays around them because they think that if they associate themselves with a gay person, then they will "turn gay," which is absolutely absurd because technically, being gay isn't a virus.

Opening up about your sexual orientation is actually very difficult for some people, unless they feel that they would have a strong support system. So I don't think that I would have a say in suggesting whether or not more gay people should come out.

    1. This is what I mean, like why aren't they just left alone and not talked or judged with. Yeah this is what I think about it, it's none of your business, and as for religion god has the only right to judge anybody, not the people we see that are completely against it. That is ridiculous saying that I will turn gay if I hang out with somebody that is. Yeah I agree with your thoughts on people opening themselves to controversy, but they need to step up for themselves, you can't be trapped in a bottle forever.

    3. Yeah, its true that you can't be trapped in a bottle forever, but in reality, there can be a lot of consequences associated with opening up especially if you live in places like the Middle-East or South Asia. You could be jailed or even killed. However, people who live in places like Canada, or the States have an easier time coming out because they most likely have a stronger support system, and like Hassan said, they don't have the fear of being killed.

  2. Homosexuals are a hot topic because people are striving for change in society. In certain cases, we might not even want to talk about other people's sexuality but still do. This is because, in today's society, you are easily put in a position to converse about homosexuality. The issue of homophobia and topic of homosexuality is clearly embedded in our educational system. Sitting in class and following curriculum can put you in a position to tackle the issue of homophobia. It has become a frequently discussed topic in schools. This comment is a testament to that.

Hamza, I agree with you that the topic of homosexuality overrated. As a man, I could care less about another person's sexual orientation. The homophobes need to let others practice their life the way they please. If a certain lifestyle is not harming anyone, there is no issue. Non-Homophobes are also responsible for making a big deal out of the issue. This fuels homophobic people and creates a perpetual cycle. The sooner ALL people stop making a big issue out of this, the better it is.

People are concerned with gays around them because homosexuality is a restricted act in many religions. Many people tend to associate what THEY believe to be a sinful act with an individual's character.

If you are gay, let it out. This is a free country, you won't get stoned.

    1. Yes, it is talked about in school many times and that's how conversations about how this and that is wrong. I agree for that might be the reason for it, people are striving for change in society. Yeah same here, I can care less about what another man or woman does, it's there own free life. Yeah it takes place with so many things, but where are the protests for other important issues going on. Who has the time to get boards and strike against people that are gay. I agree with that religion paragraph you mentioned but at the same time who are we to judge, you know? If you believe god is there, he will judge them not us. That's the problem they don't want to maybe sometime soon this whole issue will end.

  3. I think homosexuality is a topic that is being talked a lot about because people do not look into it and hide behind religion. Without facts they judge people because they are different than the norm, and judging what's against the norm is what people love to do. That is today's society.

I feel people still think of homosexuality as a disease and it needs a cure. As I read somewhere, if being queer is a disease then why don't we all just call sick to work or school and say "We can't come today, still queer."

I believe the conflict against homosexuality is very over rated and like Zara said, people need to get over it. I also agree that there are many problems in the world that we could focus on such as poverty. It's not like we are being hurt by someone being homosexual, that is like someone who is homosexual saying "You being straight offends me."

Just let people do what they want as long as they aren't hurting anyone. I think gay people should definitely come out because there is no reason to hide. Like President Obama said "no one should be afraid to walk down the street holding the hand of someone they love."

    1. I agree that religion is a big part of people denying it. People judge without knowing situations at all times. That is something that decreases gay self esteem. I totally agree with you, like how many strikes do you see people giving about poverty? Rarely because this is something not concerning but homosexuality is. That is a wrong case in my opinion. Obama was right when he says something like that, it doesn't matter either it's a man with a man or a female with a female. They're not disturbing you, so just let it go.

  4. Homosexuality has not been openly addressed until the past recent decades. Of course the relationship between men and women existed prior to all the exposure but it was kept extremely private due to the consequences which include death for some. Now that people are being more open about their sexuality and willing to answer all the questions, the opposing side is scrutinizing them. Yes I agree that the topic of homosexuality is overrated because while people are fighting for equality others around the world are fighting for their lives. However, that doesn’t mean that the topic of homosexuality is not worthy enough for us to discuss. People are being affected by this as well and I’m glad they are speaking up and taking a stand. Our world will never be perfect, but that doesn’t mean we stop fighting for the things we believe in because there are too many other issues in the world. It’s in human nature to be afraid of change; we have never adapted easily to any movement in our society. A few years back the hot topic was women’s right and now it is gays’ rights. However, as time goes on, society learns to adapt and the so-called abhorrent topic becomes a norm. We’re in the difference of opinion stage right now but by the time we are in our mid 30s I’m sure this will die down and gay people will be accepted more. By your last question I’m guessing you mean if gay people should come out of the closet or not…. Of course they should. Coming out of the closet to me means that they aren’t afraid to be judged or mistreated due to their sexual orientation. However in the end it’s their choice if they want to be private about their lives or not. Hetero people aren’t expected to announce their sexuality so nor should homo people be.

    1. This is what I mean, people are dying in other parts in the world, yet you still have people talking about how they don't want a man that is gay to live near them. People aren't willing to make a final decision of just ignoring it. There are a lot of issues going on in the world, and why is this one of the main ones that include war? They should just reveal their real self rather than having to hide.

  6. Homosexuality is being talked about eveywhere, all around the world. A lot of countries are legalizing same sex marriages. Also as there are a lot of people who are against homosexuality, they talk about it in a negative way to their acquaintances. Some people in society are not as open-minded as others.
Yes, I think it is over-rated as there are a lot of problems already in society, people should worry more about helping people in need instead of going against people who are doing nothing wrong.
People are concerned about gays being around them maybe because if the person is a guy:he might be scared that his friend will stsart liking him or maybe the gay person will affect them in a way.
I think homosexuals should tell people if they feel the need to say it and it feel comfortable.

    1. That's the problem, people in this country or continent come from different backgrounds at times and they are not open minded. It's also over-rated because it's a negative in society. Rather than trying to find freedom and peace in other parts of the world, people are going against it, because that is basically what they're doing. They want to take freedom from gays.

  7. People don't like change. Whether it's the education system (lessons being taught) or the legal system (Gun free country dispute in America). Not so long ago did women get their rights. I bet it was the most outrageous idea that came across people's thought. Something like homosexuality in today's society, where people find it absurd. That's probably because people never expected to be so publicized.
It's true that homosexuality has existed for a very long time, but now that people are being open about it and it's increasing all over the world. It has become a problem. Personally, I don't care, their lives do not concern mine. Canada is democratic country, people have the right to express their beliefs and opinion, hence they should too. As it is slowly starting to be acknowledged by society.

    1. Yeah I agree, but I think the reason behind women success as in women's rights is because of the people that stepped up. In the gay community, you really don;t have a "leader" if that is the word. Yes, there are many athletes, presidents, and T.V personalities talking about how it is okay, but there isn't a person like Elizabeth Stanton who stood for the women, and benefited. That's exactly what I mean, I can care less if it's Pitt and Julie or Harris and Burtka as my neighbors.

  8. Homosexuality is over rated due to culture and discrimination it causes. People are afraid the accept the change because it brings evil to the world according to a lot of people.

I agree with you that people are concerned with others being homosexual for no reason whatsoever, it totally makes sense to spend all that energy on something that is harmful to people around the world.

Of course, i believe people should come out if they are gay because they shouldn't have to hide their identity due to what others think of them. If someone doesn't like your behavior and cant accept you for who you are then so what. Soon enough all these people who discriminate will not be in your life. Everyone moves on, one day they are concern with one thing and the next day they find something else to criticize. The fact that you are okay with who you are, because at the end of the day the only person you should be concerned with is yourself.

  9. I think people are concerned with homosexuals because of ignorance. They may believe that homosexuals are corrupting the world, are a bad example for their children, or simply just don't like them. I don't think gay people should come out if they are in a country or environment that hates homosexuals, because of course, they will get attacked/killed/bullied. I think they should come out to people that appreciate them/ are friends with, so they don't experience a hard life.

    1. I believe so too, because of ignorance. I think they should no matter the society. I don't about them getting killed like you said, but yeah bullied and attacked. You have to realize though that people that are homosexual are judged everywhere, I mean we live in North America, and people are still judged here. I disagree with your point of not coming out, they should all come out, because that helps others admit to it too.

  10. I think that homosexuality is a common topic because it is something new and a lot of people are becoming neutral to this topic, which is making it a big deal along with the fact that many religions are against homosexuality. They do not accept that humans can love the same gender and they believe that it is against nature; the point of being human is to reproduce and if you cannot reproduce why do you live?
I agree with you when you say that people are freaking out about people being gay. There are so many other things to be freaking out about and yet everyone comes back to homosexuality. Like you said, poverty, war and the economy are more important things in the world, being homo is not really doing anything to those in society and no one is being hurt either.
I think people are concerned with the gay people because they cannot talk about the other things in society or do anyhting about the so it just leaves the on topic of the people that are gay and in a vulnable.
I would not say that gay people should come out I think it is for them to decide, it is up to their situation and how they are living, if they have a life where they know that someone will accept them if they leave the closet then I think that they should open up, but if they feel they will be dejected then maybe they will stay away from the door. They should in that case leave things as they are.

    1. I agree that religion and culture is a big part of homosexuality not being accepted by many people. Well that means every single person that doesn't have a child should be criticized for not reproducing. After all gays can always adopt children that can produce if they are not gay that is. That's the problem with society, concerning themselves with the wrong things. People don't want to see gays but they would rather see people killed around the world. That's what I understand from people that strike against gays, but don't against people that oppose humanity. I disagree with that last paragraph, it's like what I told Amanjot, they need to come out to show how strong their case is no matter what, because they are are going to be judged and criticized by people anyway.

  11. I think that homosexuality is over talked about in the news and just in general because of the fact that there are two different views on it. One group of people view it as something that is totally unnatural and should not be allowed while other people believe it’s how someone is born. I do agree with you because i do think its overrated, people focus to much on other peoples lives that they don't pay attention to themselves. They probably have more problems in their own lives that they should be concerned about themselves instead of putting their two cents in where it is unnecessary. I think people are so concerned with the homosexuals around them because they grew up learning it is wrong and have an extreme hat for it. Another reason why people would be so concerned about it is because it's so so talked about now a days in the news and everywhere you go.

  12. 1) People have nothing else to talk about. Since people have begun coming out of the closet, someone has to make it a big deal and act as if doomsday is about to occur. People tend to talk about things that are different, whether it be good or bad.
    2) Yes I agree that it is overrated, but everyone is entitled to their opinion.
    3) I think people are concerned about the gays because they are portrayed as the "needy". There are two ways in which they get attention, either someone supports them and fights for them, or they hate them and want to kill them. Which is totally wrong.
    4) Homosexuals should do what they want to. If they wanna come out of the closet, then be my guest. And if you don't feel comfortable yet, its fine with me. Take all the time you need.

  13. In my opinion I feel that homosexuals are talked about by everyone because people think that raising a child with two same sex is wrong. I feel that this is over-rated, and I do agree with you, why not just leave them alone? And what have they done to you? Some people are concern with gays being around them because they are homophobic. In some ways gay people could start telling the truth. This could end up with positive feedback and negative as well.
