Now in this era, since society has changed a lot and morals of people have been altered, there are still people out there who believe in that women should only stay at home 24/7, care for the kids, maintain the house, clean, cook, and obey all the stuff that his husband says.
Do you believe that this should be the case still?
Not only Cooking and cleaning, people also believe that women still are not strong enough to open jars and should only ask the men to open it.
Also not only regarding housework, people also believe that women should also only provide as much as sexual pleasure to the men because it's her job as a part of being a women and not sit around like a sloth.
And as you all know this, the most viral
Is a woman's place only in the kitchen or should she work as a man too?

Here i have a video showing and depicting the interpretation of Gender roles in our society now and before.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9d6Q72Gq850&noredirect=1
So the questions i want you guys to answer are as follows: -
1) Should Women only cook and clean and men should work?
2) Is it only the old generation people, who still have the sexist thinking about gender roles?
3) Should our gender roles be mixed or same as before where the women is the head of the kitchen?
4) Why should men also cook and clean like the women since it is not manly?

I strongly disagree with this statement. It makes sense that the old generation would have an issue with this, as they lived a life of old tradition and cultures of inequality. Not so long ago did women get their rights, and finally we see the uprising of equality between women and men. Their gender roles are becoming more insignificant in the western countries.
ReplyDeleteIn Challenge & Change class we were shown statistics in Canada, of more females getting high grades and are dominating universities and careers. Apart from beating men, the statistics represents the gender balance in Canadian society as both, males and females are receiving the same opportunities.
In fact, some of the careers for instance Kindergarten teacher, looks to hire men because there is more women teachers.
My point being that, together, men and women are capable of maintaining order and are able to come to an equal consensus. Thus, no reason to have unfair roles. There's no harm in men cooking, most of the chefs are male on T.V.

DeleteBro Preetam said he strongly disagrees with you, and you said I strongly agree, what are you on?
DeleteI said I strongly disagree with "Should our gender roles be altered"
DeleteI disagree with the fact that only women should clean and men should work. My reason for this is because it difficult for an individual to sustain a family on one income especially in the west. I also believe in equity and if a women wants to work than she should be able to work.
ReplyDeleteI do think that is older generation of people have this mentality of strict gender roles. In can relate this to my own life, in my home my brother has more freedom than me and my sisters. A classic example would be cleaning the house. My mom never lets my brother clean and when I ask my mom she says it's because he's basically incapable of cleaning even though I know he can.
I do think that gender roles should mixed but to some extent. Obviously men and women are not equal 100% because of different biological factors that cannot be changed i.e. men can't gave birth. But I also believe in moderation and If a women and man both work, than they should both be responsible for the domestic duties that should be done like cooking and cleaning.
I don’t agree that cooking is 'not manly' because it's like saying girls who play sports are 'not girly'. I also remember seeing a statistic that said about 70% of men cooks as a profession, so at the end of the day you can’t group people into 'manly' and 'not manly'.
I totally 100% agree with you Ikram.
DeleteEven i believe that cooking is not girly because i cook and bake at home too but it's mainly because of the society's perspective that we judge genders and their roles.
Most of our society people have drawback minds and pick out flaws in every modern thing which occurs nowadays.
I totally disagree with the notion that women should be the only ones to do housework. If a man is a part of a family, then he should act like he is apart of one, and put some effort in. Why do women always have to be the ones to bow down and do the work? Men should at least be able to clean their dishes, clean their clothes and cook food for themselves. If women weren’t around, then men would inevitably learn how to do it them selves right? A woman shouldn’t have to pick up her man’s slack.
ReplyDeleteNo, I don’t think that it is just people of the older generation that have a sexist mentality. I see it even in our school today. Guys think that they run women, and they use derogatory words towards the girls, and its disgusting because the girls don’t even tell them off. For the older generation, it was a large part of society back then and it was widely accepted. However, in today’s society almost every person is educated on equality between the two genders, and there is almost no legitimate reason to be sexist.
I think that the gender roles should be mixed because again, it is a major way to practice equality. Men should be able to, or should learn how to do the work that once, only women did.
For the last question, I don’t see how cooking is unmanly? How can cooking define if you are a man or not? Does it make you less of a man if you do your part at home? This is what is wrong with our society today. People take the smallest actions like cooking, and define it so that it fits a certain sex. People really need to change their mentality. In my opinion, men are perfectly capable of cooking, cleaning, taking care of kids and working, so there is virtually nothing but their egos that are stopping them from actually doing it.
I agree with you Zara but i think that women are the ones who some men believe that should bow down because they think that women are more frail than them and that only the male gender is superior and powerful, which is obviously not true at all.
DeleteAnd for the cooking factor, its basically because that society says that cooking is unmanly because only a women is supposed to do it and if a man cooks for his family or even his wife basically means he has no power and is like a servant of her, which is totally wrong.

Men should learn to cook and clean. My mom told me one day no one will be able to do it for me.
ReplyDeleteYounger people are more educated, so they aren't as bad as older generations. However, many young boys incorporate stereotyped gender roles of women into their humor. It is not remotely funny.
Gender roles should be mixed. What if you partner gets sick and can't cook? You can't starve.
I disagree with you. As long as you don't cut off your organ, what is not manly about it?
I agree with you hassan that gender roles should be mixed because it is essential for both gender to know the necessities of life such as cooking or cleaning.
DeleteAnd i also agree that younger generations now incorporate it as funny but from my perspective it is funny but to a certain extent.
I disagree with that statement because now a days it is hard to afford a house or raise a family without two people working, besides men are capable of cooking and cleaning and I don't think it is considered unmanly of men to be cooking because i think every women would want their husband to cook for them and would want to have a off ( this goes with men as well). I'm also probably use to seeing a guy cook because of my dad. I think some of the old generations and certain countries who lack education will still believe in this, however, you do slowly see this changing. Moreover, I think Gender roles should be mixed, like take days in being in the kitchen or doing chores so it doesn't result into a conflict and brings equality.
ReplyDeleteThats the main point Priya.
DeleteGender roles should definitely be mixed because it does not show that who is more superior, instead it creates more equality and understanding between couples who will luckily be a good example for other couples.
Well that depends, not every couple is like that, some men still think they are superior than woman, whether they are modern day couple or not and
DeleteI guess that depends on how their views were as a child, and how they were grown. Also I think judgement plays a factor in this.
I don’t think that women should only cook and clean, think there should be equality with this, men should know how to cook and clean as well as the women, what are they going to do when the women is not there? Leave the house dirty? I hope not. In today’s society more women are working then they were in the past and that is why I think that they should work, I want to work until I feel it is necessary to work.
ReplyDeleteI don’t think it is only the oldest generation that has the thought that men and women should be a certain way, but it is everyone and the way they are being raised. A lot of the mothers don’t raise their children with equality and say that the girl will be doing the housework and the boy will not be taking any part in it. Children are being spoiled and taught what the parents think is considered right in society.
I still think that the woman is the head of the kitchen. It’s not the man goes and cooks in the kitchen as much as the women still do in our society, I mean, sure there is some change in society, but honesty, do you think that the man will be the one to cook and clean.
I think it is important to know how to cook and clean since it might save to one day to be honest I think that a lot of women would find it easier and would much more prefer it if their man could cook and clean, it would be like a burden being lifted off their shoulders.
You are so right Minahal, it is true that a woman should find a man who knows how to cook and clean.
DeleteAnd i kind of agree with your point that its not the only older generation to blame because my mom taught me how to cook and everything because she said that it's an asset which everyone should have, it does not matter if that gender is a male or female.
Of course women shouldn’t be made to perform all the household chores. But some do choose to be housewives to raise the kids and take care of the home instead of working. In both cases, men should help out where the see their wife has a lot of work to do and they have leisure time. In our generation, gender roles have become a mockery especially among males. We see so many memes about women belonging in the kitchen making a sandwich etc and it takes out the seriousness of the matter. Each family has a different situation and I don’t think we should allocate certain roles to one gender. A lot of times there are single parents who have to perform all the duties to raise their kids and make a living as well. As long as both men and women understand that no job is above or below them I think gender roles will start to diminish. Um… just because a guy can cook doesn’t mean he is less masculine. A lot of the chefs today are men and they make the best food, even better than women. Guys who can cook and clean up themselves are like diamonds today, very rare.
ReplyDeleteIt's true that memes totally take out the seriousness between the gender roles, which i think sometimes is kind of offensive because both genders should know the basics of life. And yeah I am a diamond.
DeleteWell, the first is kind of obvious, no. Women shouldn't only cook or clean, because some of us are lazy and don't want to anyways. Secondly, it's not only elders who follow the gender roles, but children do as well. From a young age we are told what to do and how to behave. For example, when a baby boy is dressed in blue and given a toy car, or as in the commercial, the girl is dressed in pink with a kitchen play-set. I think our gender roles should be eliminated completely. Both a woman and a man are needed to run a house, and it is both of their responsibility to do chores. Finally there is no reason for men to cook and clean just as their isn't for women. If you live in the house, your cooking and cleaning. Deal with it.
ReplyDeleteBack in the old day that's how it always was with cooking and cleaning. Women being in the kitchen while the men would go to work. Nowadays men and women can do the same job. I don't think women should only clean and cook, especially if money is running low. I absolutely agree that the old generations still think that women should be in the kitchen. That's is how they were taught when they were raised. I think gender roles should be mixed in some cases when it comes to cooking and cleaning. This would make it equal for both partners.
