Double Standard Rule

Women have always been expected by society to maintain a certain extent of modesty with their sexuality, and are looked down upon on by society if the engage in promiscuous behaviour. But if a man engages in promiscuous behavior, society doesn’t condemn him; in fact he is idolized by his male friends, and even viewed as more attractive to women in some cases. Why does society hold this double standard towards women? And why are women expected to maintain a certain degree of modesty while men are free to indulge themselves, without having to worry about being judged?

If it’s shameful for women to have multiple sexual partners then this rule should also apply to men as well. Unlike society, the biological consequences of engaging promiscuity are the same for both men and women, as the risk of sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy does not discriminate between the two genders. So if this appears so, shouldn't society take the same approach as biology and condemn men as well for engaging in promiscuous behaviour?

Questions
  1. Why do you think society holds this double standard rule towards women and not men?
  2. Do you believe that women and men should be held with different standards when it comes to sex?
  3. What stance would you prefer society taking, condemning promiscuity for both men and women? Or condoning promiscuity for both men and women?

  1. I think that this society hold this double standard because of the fact that throughout history and in the Media men have always been dominant and could do whatever they want whereas the women were supposed to be shy and submissive being committed to one relationship, so if the idea of women having sex stands out because it’s not something that’s supposed to be common.

I don’t think that men and women should have different standards when it comes to sex because it is bias and the biggest most common double standard we see in our society. A guy shouldn’t be allowed to insult women who have sex when he himself has sex a lot. Its vet prejudice and subjective and that shouldn’t be allowed.

I would prefer society condemning promiscuous behavior between men and women because this way there would be no double standards that people would abide by.

    1. I completely with the fact that a man has no place judging a woman fir her promiscuity when he himself engages in the same kind of behavior. However I also believe that as women, we play a role in this double standard by bringing down other women for this.

I agree with you in the fact that society should start looking down upon men as well for having multiple sexual partners.

      Thanks for responding Ikram :)

  2. I think people have believed that a woman's virginity is more important because her hymen can be torn. In some cultures, they check if it has been torn before she gets married. With a man, his physical being is not altered. I know its stupid.

Men and women should be held to the same standard when it comes to sex. I mentioned the cultural value behind the hymen and how it only applies to women. A man should be just as guilty, because he is the one tearing it.

The stance I would prefer is, sex life remaining a private matter for both genders.

    1. I really appreciate you sharing this insight with me, as I was not aware that this tradition existed in some cultures. But I agree with you on the fact that men should be equally responsible.

      Thanks for Sharing!

  3. This double standard towards women isn't fair at all, but at the same time, I personally believe that a woman should have respect for herself. If she doesn't condone in promiscous activities, society will not ridicule her for it. The same thing should go for men. They shouldn't be praised for their sexual actions towards women. Both genders should refrain from making their sex lives public. This way, no one would be judged. If a women wants to have multiple sexual relationships, then that's up to her. She shouldn't be looked down upon because men aren't looked down upon for their same actions. But once again, I believe that a women should respect herself first, in order to earn respect from others. This would avoid any type of ridicule at all.

  5. I believe that this double standard is held towards women and not men because of stereotypes that were set as a precedent centuries ago. Our society claims to want equality from both genders but when it comes to sex women are always frowned upon. In my opinion, it won't ever change because of how much society has brainwashed us thinking that men play the more dignifying role.
I wouldn't take any side when it comes to condeming promiscuity, although I would view both to be them identical.
But if you we're asking me to personally decide I would view the man being as worse as a woman. This is because as a girl, I wouldn't want to date a person who was once claimed as a womanizer.
