Honeeeeeey, I'm home! *Woman's Voice*
"Double Standards". I think we've all had enough of them. For those who aren't aware of what a double standard is, this is how Oxford Dictionaries defines it: "a rule or principle which is unfairly applied in different ways to different people or groups".
Why is it okay for a man to bring in an income, but sometimes looked down upon when a woman wants to make her own dollars? Why can a woman be very emotional without anyone saying anything to her, but when a man is emotional, he's considered weak? These sterotypes are portrayed amongst women and men in society. We've become so small minded that society as a whole does not realize the truth that women can do whatever men can do, and men can do whatever woman can do, as long as the stigma of double standards is erased from our minds. But who's to blame? I personally believe the media is the one to blame. The media's constructed in a way to make us believe what they want us to believe, or in other words, to brainwash us completely. The subliminal messages in commercials, the stereotypes incorporated into TV shows, and the ads in magazines that portray the stereotypical "jobs" of males and females. All of these aspects are associated with the double standards we deal with today. This video below shows how the media should take the blame of double standards.

Yeah I think that that the media in a way, brainwashes us into think that we have to look and act a certain way in order fit into the roles of society. In the video we see women acting one way, cleaning, cooking and being submissive wives to their husbands.
ReplyDeleteThe double standard I disagree with the most is the most is that If a guy is raped the new talks about it everywhere and it becomes world wide news. On the other side, if a girl gets raped, people say that 'she was asking for it' or they dismiss the issue because its a common occurrence. This bothers me because people overlook the one incident and only focus on the other when they are both issues that should be addressed seriously. I think both are affected equally, its just a matter of how you look at it. If you look at sex, then yeah, women are affected by it more, but if you look at how people dress, if a women wear jeans and a tee then there no problem but if a man wears a skirt people look at him weird and judge him.
In my opinion I don't think that the upcoming generation will let go of this stigma because there are a lot of people who still believe in gender roles and that people should act a certain way in order for society to function. At the same time I still think that it is possible because of the fact that people now a days are more open minded than they use to so it is very possible for the idea to die down but not completely.
I agree with you 100%. The media is definetely the one to blame due to their brainwashing of individuals in society. The double standard that you disagree with is also one that I disagree with. Yes, it's very unusual for a man to get raped, but there are many young women who get raped everyday and no one has a clue. I understand what you mean about the upcoming genration not letting go of this stigma, but don't you think that women in our generation will try their best to get rid of these double standards and continue to fight for equality?
DeleteThe double standard I disagree with the most is that when men know specific qualites that they want in a woman, they are considered shallow. But when women have specific qualities they would like in a man, they are considered classy and discerning. From my own experiences I have noticed that both men and women generally benefit from double standards. I also believe that both men and women appreciate the double standard equally when it shows to be convenient for them. I personally dont feel that our generation or future generations will let go of this stigma. I feel this way because we have lived our lives since these guidlines have been known to us. Such guidlines have been so engrained in us by society that I feel double standards will not be something we can let go of.
ReplyDeleteI also disagree with that double standard. It isn't fair to men at all. I believe that both genders should have an idea of what they want in a partner without being judged. I disagree with you on your last point though. I believe with enough education and knowledge on equality, I think that the upcoming generation will not pay any attention to these double standards.
DeleteI think that the media plays a vital role in stereotyping and double standards. It has established this idea of what an ideal person looks like, how they should act and what their role in society is. Since many people watch, read and listen regularly to what the media has to say, they are often influenced by it (regardless of positive or negative messages being sent).
ReplyDeleteI have to say, that I don’t like the one where a girl is labeled a “slut” if she has multiple relationships with men, but if a guy does the same thing, all of a sudden, he is “the man.” In my opinion, these actions aren’t something to be proud of, and this goes for both genders, but why is it, that in many cases, a woman is ridiculed?
I think that there are so many double standards that apply to both genders that it is hard to say. However, I think that they are pretty much equal.
I think that since our generation and the ones still to come will be more educated on equality they will soon rid themselves of these double standards.
I totally agree with you. It seems like females are always being looked down upon for their actions nowadays but if a man commits the same actions, he is praised a majority of the time. There are an endless amount of double standards present in society today, but I believe some are more harsh than others, rather then all double standards being equal. I also agree that our generation and the upcoming generations will do their best to get rid of these double standards. It bothers us alot and both genders will do whatever for both to be looked at equally.
DeleteI completely agree that the media plays a big role on influencing gender role stereotypes and other double standards. If you take a look at the article I posted earlier about men proposing to women, that to me is a double standard that is followed. Sometimes it depends on the person, but women are mostly influenced by double standards because of the inequality that we have had in the past. It affects men as well but I believe that women are looked down upon more since we aren't seen as strong and powerful as men in our natural character.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that your article shows exactly how double standards affect our society today. If a women loves her man that much, there shouldn't be any problem with her proposing to him. But it's just very odd cause it's not a norm in society. I also agree with your point that women are the ones to be influenced the most by these double standards. Men come off as having more pride then women. Many believe that us women don't have much of a say, that's why we're always targeted with these double standards.
